Electric Bike FAQs

What is an e-bike and how does it work?

An e-bike is a bicycle fitted with a battery-powered motor that helps you pedal - whether through pedal-assist or, on some models, via a throttle. When you pedal, sensors detect your effort and activate the motor to provide extra push, making climbs and challenging terrain easier.

What types of e-bikes are available?

There are several options to suit different needs, including:

  • Cargo e-bikes for carrying loads or passengers
  • City/urban e-bikes for quick, efficient commuting
  • Fat tyre e-bikes for a stable, off-road ride
  • Folding e-bikes for easy storage and travel
  • Hybrid e-bikes that blend road and mountain bike features
  • Electric mountain bikes for rugged off-road adventures
  • Step-through e-bikes for comfortable mounting
Are e-bikes legal in the UK, and what about those with throttles?

Yes, electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) are legal if their motor does not exceed 250W and the assistance cuts off at 15.5 mph.

Walk-assist functionality is allowed as long as it only works without pedalling up to 6km/h; to go any faster, you must pedal.

How waterproof are e-bikes and how do I choose the right size?

E-bikes are designed with water resistance, so you can ride in the rain and through puddles. However, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s guidelines for details on water resistance. For choosing the right size, please refer to our comprehensive size guide.

What if I run out of battery and how do I charge an e-bike?

Even if the battery runs out, you can ride your e-bike like a normal bicycle - although it will feel a bit heavier. Battery range varies based on capacity and conditions, and charging typically takes between 3 and 8 hours. The cost to charge is usually between £0.04 and £0.15 per charge.

What is the difference between hub-drive and mid-drive motors, and how do the sensors work?

Hub-drive motors are located in the wheel, offering a simpler, quieter, and more cost-effective option, though they might struggle on steep hills. Mid-drive motors, placed at the pedals, use the bike’s gears for better hill-climbing but may require more maintenance.

Additionally, torque sensors measure how hard you pedal for a smooth ride, while cadence sensors simply detect if you’re pedalling.

What warranty, weight, and other specifications should I know about e-bikes?

All our e-bikes come with a minimum 6-month manufacturer’s warranty, though this doesn’t cover damage from negligence or non-original parts.

Most models weigh between 15 and 28kg. For more detailed information, please check the product specification on the product pages.
