Electric Bikes
What is an e-bike and how does it work?
An e-bike is a bicycle fitted with a battery-powered motor that helps you pedal - whether through pedal-assist or, on some models, via a throttle. When you pedal, sensors detect your effort and activate the motor to provide extra push, making climbs and challenging terrain easier.
What types of e-bikes are available?
There are several options to suit different needs, including:
- Cargo e-bikes for carrying loads or passengers
- City/urban e-bikes for quick, efficient commuting
- Fat tyre e-bikes for a stable, off-road ride
- Folding e-bikes for easy storage and travel
- Hybrid e-bikes that blend road and mountain bike features
- Electric mountain bikes for rugged off-road adventures
- Step-through e-bikes for comfortable mounting
Are e-bikes legal in the UK, and what about those with throttles?
Yes, electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) are legal if their motor does not exceed 250W and the assistance cuts off at 15.5 mph.
Walk-assist functionality is allowed as long as it only works without pedalling up to 6km/h; to go any faster, you must pedal.
How waterproof are e-bikes and how do I choose the right size?
E-bikes are designed with water resistance, so you can ride in the rain and through puddles. However, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s guidelines for details on water resistance. For choosing the right size, please refer to our comprehensive size guide.
What if I run out of battery and how do I charge an e-bike?
Even if the battery runs out, you can ride your e-bike like a normal bicycle - although it will feel a bit heavier. Battery range varies based on capacity and conditions, and charging typically takes between 3 and 8 hours. The cost to charge is usually between £0.04 and £0.15 per charge.
What is the difference between hub-drive and mid-drive motors, and how do the sensors work?
Hub-drive motors are located in the wheel, offering a simpler, quieter, and more cost-effective option, though they might struggle on steep hills. Mid-drive motors, placed at the pedals, use the bike’s gears for better hill-climbing but may require more maintenance.
Additionally, torque sensors measure how hard you pedal for a smooth ride, while cadence sensors simply detect if you’re pedalling.
What warranty, weight, and other specifications should I know about e-bikes?
All our e-bikes come with a minimum 6-month manufacturer’s warranty, though this doesn’t cover damage from negligence or non-original parts.
Most models weigh between 15 and 28kg. For more detailed information, please check the product specifications on our pages.
Electric Scooters
Why might my e-scooter battery drain faster than expected?
Battery range depends on factors like the combined weight of you and your cargo, the assistance mode, weather conditions, tyre pressure, wind, and the terrain you ride on.
How long does it usually take to charge an e-scooter battery?
Charging times typically range from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the brand, battery capacity, and type of charger used. Always use the original charger!!!
How often should I charge and maintain my e-scooter battery?
For best performance, charge it regularly at room temperature. If not in use for a long period, keep it at around 60% charge and check it periodically. Always use the manufacturer’s recommended charger.
What is the typical lifespan of an e-scooter battery?
Most e-scooter batteries last between 300 and 500 cycles, roughly equating to one to three years or between 3,000 and 10,000 miles, depending on usage and maintenance.
How should I care for my e-scooter battery regarding cleanliness and moisture?
While e-scooters are built with some water resistance, none are fully waterproof. Avoid excessive moisture, dry the battery area if it gets wet, and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for cleaning.
What precautions can I take to minimise fire risks while charging my e-scooter?
To reduce fire hazards, never leave your battery charging unattended or while sleeping, use only the provided charger, allow the battery to cool before charging, unplug once fully charged, and consider installing a smoke alarm where you charge it.
What are the signs of a damaged e-scooter battery and can it be repaired?
Warning signs include excessive heat, poor charging performance, unusual noises, bulging, smoke, or a strange odour. In most cases, a damaged battery cannot be safely repaired - if you suspect damage, stop using it immediately and consider a replacement.

Safety & Legal Information
Is it legal to ride an e-bike on the road?
Yes, pedal-assisted e-bikes with motors up to 250W are legal for use on public roads without requiring insurance or a licence.
The speed is limited to 15.5 mph, the bike must not have a throttle, and riders must be at least 14 years old. While helmets are not legally required, we strongly recommend wearing one for safety.
For more details, check the gov.uk website and our legal guide.
Do I need insurance for my e-bike?
If your e-bike has a motor under 250W, insurance is not legally required. However, we highly recommend getting insurance to cover theft and accidental damage.
Do I need a licence to ride an e-bike?
No, if you are over 14 years old, you do not need a licence, registration, or vehicle tax to ride an e-bike in the UK, as long as it qualifies as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC).
To meet EAPC regulations, an e-bike must:
- Have pedals for propulsion.
- Stop motor assistance beyond 15.5 mph (25 km/h).
- Have a motor output of 250W or less.
E-bikes that exceed these limits are classified as motor vehicles and require registration, insurance, road tax, a valid driving licence, and a motorcycle helmet.
For more details, see the gov.uk website and our legal guide.
Is riding an e-bike safe? Do I need a helmet?
E-bikes are just as safe, if not safer, than traditional bicycles. Pedal assistance reduces rider fatigue, helping you stay more alert. Their ability to accelerate quickly at junctions and maintain steady speeds with traffic improves road safety. Plus, climbing hills is easier, reducing strain and distraction.
Helmets are not legally required but are strongly recommended to reduce the risk of injury.

Cycle to Work
Who can join the Cycle to Work scheme?
Any employee paid through PAYE who earns above the National Minimum Wage after salary sacrifice can join - even those under 18 with a guardian’s signed agreement. Employers of any size may participate.
How does my employer get involved?
If your employer doesn’t offer the benefit, ask them to contact one of our providers - Gogeta can set up the scheme quickly.
What is salary sacrifice and how do I save?
You agree to a temporary salary reduction (usually over 12 months) in exchange for a bike and accessories. Because deductions come from your gross pay, you pay less income tax and National Insurance.
Which bikes are available?
You can choose any pedal or road-legal e-bike from our catalogue, as long as it is primarily used for commuting.
What savings can I expect?
Basic-rate taxpayers can save around 32%, while higher-rate taxpayers may save about 42% - sometimes up to 47% depending on the purchase. Employers also save roughly 13.8% on National Insurance Contributions.
Is there a maximum cost for the bike or equipment?
There’s no upper limit, provided your employer has a Consumer Credit Licence to offer higher value bikes.
Who owns the bike during the hire period?
The employer (or the finance company/bank if they fund the scheme) retains ownership throughout the hire period.
Must the bike be used for commuting?
Yes, at least 50% of its use should be for commuting, although you can still use it for personal trips.
Who handles maintenance and what if the bike is stolen?
You are responsible for routine maintenance. Should the bike be stolen, you must replace it while continuing to use it mainly for commuting. Comprehensive insurance is available through our insurance partner.
What happens at the end of the hire period or if I leave my job?
There’s no obligation for immediate ownership transfer at the end of the hire period, though many employers offer it. If you leave or are made redundant after the cooling-off period, you must repay the remaining salary sacrifice amount in full, and no further Cycle to Work orders can be placed until your current agreement ends.
Safety equipment-only orders also require a minimum spend of £100, and only approved items are eligible.
